The Kurst Submarine ♥ 9:21 pm

Recently, my group (Group 6) presented on our Science Question: How does a submarine float or sink at will. We found out that the submarines are built with two tanks at the side, known as "Ballast Tanks", which contain water, causing the submarine to sink. In order to float, air is pumped into the tanks, pushing the water out. Since air is much lighter than water, the submarine would then float.

Taking our teacher's advice, we brought up the tragedy of the Kurst Submarine, a Russian Submarine that sank in 2000. While firing at dummy targets, one of its torpedos got jammed and exploded in the torpedo chamber, causing a big hole in the submarine and the water to come rushing in, hence sinking it. Many died immediately, leaving only 12 people, including one lieteunant, in a chamber at the other end of the submarine. Through writing, the liutenent told their sad story and all 12 people ended up day at the end of the 7 days, slowly, dying one by one...

Through this sad story, we can apply the logic of the ballast tanks, and we can further understand this basic principal used in daily life.

We also ended with some food for thought: After a submarine sinks and lands on the seabed, why is it no longed able to rise again? I do hope to hear your comments and theories. The answer will be revealed in my next post. A test to see if you guys listen in class... ;)

Also, we talked about weight and mass. What is the difference between weight and mass? Well, weight is the amount of gravitational pull acting upon an object. Hence, since gravity differs based on the size of the planet, the moon would have less gravitational pull then the earth, so the weight of an object differs. On the other hand, mass is the amount of matter an object has. Therefore, the mass of an object never changes. Note that weight is measured in Newtons and mass is measured in Kilograms.
